Cyber resilience is a critical focus for industries like oil & gas, finance, aviation, and government services, where the need for robust security measures is paramount. Mohammed Azam, a cybersecurity leader, emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive approach, particularly in the face of rapid technological advancements like smart manufacturing, IoT, and AI.
In a region with a diverse, expat-heavy workforce, Mohammed highlights the challenge of ensuring consistent cyber awareness and training. “The diversity of our workforce provides both a unique technical strength and challenges in fostering uniform cyber awareness across the board,” he says, emphasizing the need for tailored training programs to bridge this gap. To combat evolving cyber threats, the organization has implemented critical frameworks, including a Data Governance Framework and OT Cybersecurity Framework, aligned with UAE/IA standards. These frameworks are essential in addressing challenges like legacy systems, IT/OT convergence, and visibility gaps, with solutions such as segmentation, continuous monitoring, and asset inventory tools.
As the threat landscape grows, AI presents new challenges. While AI adoption outpaces regulatory development, the organization is proactively creating strategies to integrate and secure AI systems within their environment. “The rapid pace of AI growth presents significant security challenges, but we are building strategies to ensure its secure integration into our infrastructure,” Mohammed adds. Compliance with regional and global standards, including ISO 27001, NIST, and ISA/IEC 62443, ensures a solid foundation. Mohammed stresses that cybersecurity must be integrated into every digital initiative, as the region embraces digital transformation. “Cybersecurity is not an afterthought—it’s a core component of every digital initiative we undertake,” he asserts.
The most impactful initiatives so far include strengthening information security policies, promoting cybersecurity awareness, and aligning cyber-risk management with enterprise risk frameworks. As emerging technologies like AI and 5G continue to reshape the region, Mohammed’s proactive approach positions the organization to stay ahead of emerging cyber threats.
