Happy #IWD2020

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, we sat down for a chat with Nicolai Solling, CTO, Help AG.

With this year’s International Women’s Day’s theme being #EachForEqual, what initiatives does Help AG have in creating equal opportunities for women within the organisation?

Despite the progress that has been made in recent decades, it’s clear that the technology industry is still male dominated. At Help AG, rather than support a belief that the ‘unique skills’ women bring to the workforce can ‘complement’ those of their male counterparts, we firm believe that the fundamental reason why cybersecurity needs more women is simply because they are just as talented, capable, hardworking and qualified as men. We support the many talented, motivated and hardworking female members of our team and proud to present them with equal opportunities to skill up and realise their full potential.

As an organization, we have also found tremendous benefit in offering cybersecurity talent – both female and male – the flexibility to work remotely. This flexibility has served to encourage women to pursue their career objectives with the confidence that they will be able to maintain the essential work-life balance.

As an individual, how are you helping empower women within and outside your organisation?

I believe it’s essential that we always inspire the people around us in all the ways we can, irrespective of their gender. This could be in the form of words of advice if need be, or support and collaboration on different projects. On many occasions, it’s about showing confidence – at times a little push or a word of appreciation can go a long way. We are always looking for people with the right attitude.

What advice would you give women who want to pursue a career in the tech industry?

Confidence and self-belief are key. While the field is still perceived to be male dominated, I have found that it offers plenty of opportunities for strong women to succeed as well. To do this, you must have the right attitude and the readiness to stand on equal footing with your male colleagues. After all, as the International Women’s Day team so eloquently put it – an equal world is an enabled world.
